“The View” hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin get candid about Timothée Chalamet’s thoughts on the current state of ballet and opera. The “Marty Supreme” Oscar nominee told Matthew McConaughey on “CNN and Variety’s Town Hall Event” that he doesn’t want movie theaters to go down the path of “ballet and opera.” There, artists want to keep it going, even though “no one cares.”
“Ballet is hard,” Hostin said on the March 9 episode of “The View” (via Entertainment Weekly). “I was angry and disappointed in what he said. I had no idea he was so stupid and shallow.”
Goldberg added, “You come from a dance family, so when you’re trashing other people’s art form, it’s not a good feeling. You probably didn’t realize it until you said, ‘Oh, I’m in trouble,’ and then you put it on top of that and said, ‘Fourteen cents.'” No, please note that if someone gets angry, the price will be much higher than 14 cents. I’m just saying. Take care, kid. ”
“He’s a boy to me,” she continued. “No disrespect. Really, don’t apologize when you insult someone. That’s not right. You can’t say, ‘Oh, this is stupid. No disrespect.'” That’s downright rude. ”
In a conversation with McConaughey, Chalamet said, “I respect actors who go on talk shows and say, ‘We’ve got to keep movie theaters alive. We’ve got to keep this genre alive.'” And another part of me feels like, like Barbie and Oppenheimer, if people want to see it, they’ll go out of their way to see it and be loud and proud. ”
“And I don’t want to go into ballet or opera or something that’s like, ‘Hey, keep this alive,’ even though it’s like no one cares about this anymore,” Chalamet added. “With all due respect to the people of ballet and opera, the ratings just dropped by 14 cents.”
London’s Royal Ballet Opera responded to Chalamet’s viral diss, posting footage of its artisans and performers on Instagram, writing: “Thousands of people gather at the Royal Opera House every night for ballet and opera. For the music, for the story, and for the sheer magic of live performance. If you want to reconsider (Timothée Chalamet), our doors are open.” English National Opera also invited Chalamet to perform. Seattle Opera made headlines when it offered 14% off tickets to its production of “Carmen” using the promo code “Timothy.”
Dojo Cat also slammed Chalamet in a now-deleted TikTok post, in which she said, “Opera is 400 years old. Ballet is 500 years old. Someone named Tim O Thai Cha Lamette. had the nerve to say in front of the camera that no one cares. I’m sure you could go to the opera theater right now, the seats would be filled, and no one would say anything when the performance started because everyone has that much money.”I respect that. ”
