“Catfish: TV Show” is dead underwater.

The reality show, which investigated deceptive online relationships, was cancelled on MTV after nine seasons, sources say diversity. The network allows producers to shop the series elsewhere, and MTV will continue to air episodes from its “Catfish” library.

The “catfish,” hosted by Nev Schulman, helped people discover the truth about their suspicious digital romance. The series is based on Schulman’s 2010 documentary of the same name. This coined the term “catfish” for those who use false identity or stolen photos to deceive others on the Internet.

Developed by Shulman, Ariel Shulman and Max Joseph, “The Catfish: Television Show” debuted on MTV in 2012 and ended with Season 9 in July 2024. In 2018, Joseph was replaced by a spinning list of presenters such as Elle King, Nick Young and Machine Gun Kelly. Eventually, Kamie Crawford joined as a permanent host and joined Schulman in 96 episodes.

“Catfish” not only name the phenomenon of digital deception. The series also produced international spinoffs in Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Mexico and the UK. The legacy continues on screen. The recent episode of “The Paper” centers around employees who are catfished by celebrity impersonators, and Netflix’s current No. 1 documentary entitled “Unknown Number: The High School Catfish.”

Since the end of season 9, “Catfish: Television Show” status was in the air as it had not received any updates or cancellations from MTV amid the rebuild of the Paramount merger. Last month, Shulman announced he was licensed as a real estate broker and would help him buy and sell homes in New York.
