Two of Universal’s most anticipated reboots have had their release dates changed. Miami Vice ’85, starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, has been moved to May 19, 2028, rescheduling the previously announced release date of the upcoming film Hamunaptra, which stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.
The untitled fourth Mummy movie, starring Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette from Radio Silence, will be released in theaters on October 15, 2027. Academy Award winners Fraser and Wise will reprise their roles as adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn O’Connell in the film, which plot details are (understandably) kept under wraps. Wrap it.
Production on the “Miami Vice” update, directed by “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski, is expected to begin later this year. On Thursday, Variety reported that newly-concluded Oscar winner Jordan and Oscar nominee Butler have signed on to play kind-hearted South Florida detectives Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and James “Sonny” Crockett in the film, which explores “the glamor and corruption of mid-’80s Miami.” The reboot is said to be inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the groundbreaking Universal television series, which “influenced culture and set the style for everything from fashion to filmmaking.” (Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson starred in the classic ’80s TV series, then Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx starred in 2006’s “Miami Vice,” directed by Michael Mann’s first big-screen feature.) “Miami Vice ’85,” previously scheduled for release on Aug. 6, 2027, will be shot for Imax.
Universal will keep the August date open and instead have an untitled event film on its calendar. The studio also scheduled a wide theatrical release of new Blumhouse films on October 8, 2027.
