Donkey! Shrek’s talkative and very poor sidekick is in the spotlight in Donkey, a spin-off of the hit animated series.

Universal and DreamWorks plan to release “Donkey” on June 30, 2028. Eddie Murphy returns to voice his signature role in the film, which tells the origin story of how Donkey became Donkey.

Donkey is directed by Charlie Bean (The Lego Batman Movie and the live-action Lady and the Tramp), produced by Rebecca Huntley (Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Bad Guys), and co-directed by DreamWorks story artist Matt Flynn, whose credits include Wild Robot, Puss in Boots and Bad Guys 2.

One year before Donkey hits theaters, Universal and DreamWorks will release Shrek 5 in summer 2027. Mike Myers, Murphy and Cameron Diaz return to the fictional land of Far Away in their signature roles as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, with Zendaya also joining the cast. Shrek 5 will be directed by series veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn.

First released in 2000, the “Shrek” series is a twist on the Happily Ever After concept, told by a misunderstood demon and a merry band of fairytale folk. The original “Shrek” was an instant hit, grossing nearly $500 million worldwide and becoming the first animated feature to win an Oscar. The film had three sequels, 2004’s Shrek 2, 2007’s Shrek the Third, and 2010’s Shrek Forever After, as well as two Puss in Boots spin-offs, which collectively grossed more than $3 billion at the worldwide box office.
