That was strange.
Geena Davis made a comeback with the Netflix show “The Boroughs,” produced by “Stranger Things” creators the Duffer Brothers, but the actress was left “deeply disappointed” when the streamer canceled the show this week.
The “Thelma & Louise” star told The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix was given no reason to pull out.
“Honestly, I don’t know what happened,” Davis said Thursday.
She noted that the show is currently in the top 10 most popular shows on Netflix, and said it’s “probably unusual for a show to be in the top 10 and not be picked up and announced as not being picked up.”
The ‘A League of Their Own’ star said the cast “didn’t expect” the show to be dropped.
The creators said they were advised to end season 1 on a cliffhanger, but chose not to.
“There’s a little hint at the end that maybe everything isn’t resolved, but this is the complete story,” she explained. “If it had been made as a limited series, it would have been a big hit and everyone would have been happy.”
Davis co-starred with Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, and Bill Pullman in the show, billed as “Stranger Things” for seniors. It was a bizarre paranormal adventure set in a retirement community.
“The Boroughs” premiered on May 21st and was canceled less than a month later, on June 17th.
According to Deadline, it drew nearly 10 million viewers in its first week, but dropped to less than 4 million in its second week, indicating there doesn’t seem to be any potential for “long-tail growth.”
The “Beetlejuice” actress was an iconic star in the ’80s and ’90s, but her career has slowed down in recent years. She last appeared in an episode of Netflix’s “GLOW” in 2019, and “The Boroughs” marked something of a comeback.
Davis told The Hollywood Reporter, “Nothing interesting happened. I’m just following what’s good.”
In the meantime, she said, she’s “interested in a lot of things,” including a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. “Feels good.”
Her character, Renee, is in a romantic relationship with a younger man, Paz (Carlos Miranda, 41). She described Renee as “the worst person” and said she was “not worried” about how the relationship would be received.
Davies said he had not heard “anything” about a spin-off of The Borrows, but that the cast was “very much in love with each other.”
“(We) just wanted to continue working together,” she added. “It’s like an anthology series.”
According to Variety, the writers were planning three seasons.
