Savannah Guthrie is out on the town, fresh off the morning after an intruder attacked co-anchor Craig Melvin in the Today show offices earlier this week.
Guthrie and her husband, Michael Feldman, were photographed at New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Friday as they prepared to depart from the Big Apple.
The 54-year-old anchor kept a low profile on the outing in a beige Celine bucket hat, jeans, sneakers and a black sweater. At one point, she is seen checking her phone, and in another snapshot, she takes a sip from her water bottle.
Mr Guthrie, whose elderly mother Nancy went missing in February, said the security breach the day before was “incredibly shocking” even though it happened shortly after leaving the building on Thursday morning, the Daily Mail reported.
“The timing couldn’t have been more heartbreaking,” a source told the outlet on Friday. “How much more can you take by yourself?”
“After everything Savannah has endured with her family, this incident happened shortly after she walked off the set. It was a huge shock to everyone, but for her the impact was different,” they added.
During the incident, an intruder (later identified as Andrew Truelove) storms the building looking for Al Roker and discovers Melvin instead. He is accused of calling Melvin the “N-word” and a racial slur during their meeting, and is currently facing numerous hate crime charges.
“Given everything she’s been through this year, it couldn’t have come at a worse time mentally,” another source close to Guthrie told the Daily Mail. “Just knowing it happened at her workplace is enough to upset anyone, even if she just retired.”
Before the incident, Guthrie had been preparing to take “several weeks” off work to film the network’s upcoming Wordle game show, and announced his upcoming hiatus on the same morning that the intruder shocked the “Today” studio.
“Everyone is relieved that she will be taking the next few weeks off to film another project,” a source claimed to the outlet. “She’s going to take some time away from all of this while everyone here catches their breath.”
The source added, “No one would blame Savannah if she decides she needs more time.”
“She has been under tremendous emotional strain and this was another shock,” they continued. “The feeling in the show is that everyone wants her to put themselves first.”
The newspaper reported that security at the “Today” show has been “intensified” and the building is “tightening all loopholes,” while a source told the Daily Mail that “Savannah’s personal protection has also been stepped up.”
A source told the show: “The entire newsroom is protecting Savannah right now. People are more worried about her than they are about the show. They just want her to be okay.”
Page Six exclusively reported on Thursday that NBC News has fired a security guard for allegedly allowing a deranged intruder into its “Today” show studio.
Later, Melvin and Roker were also granted an order of protection against True Love.
Representatives for Mr. Guthrie did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment Friday evening.
The security incident comes as the journalist continues to investigate the disappearance of his 84-year-old mother, Nancy, who disappeared from her Arizona home after a family outing and was reported missing on February 1.
Guthrie, along with his brothers Camron and Annie, have made numerous social media pleas for information about the case, and have also put out a $1 million reward.
Surveillance footage from a camera installed at Nancy’s front door revealed horrifying footage of a masked intruder, but the case remains unsolved.
Guthrie returned to the “Today” show on April 6 after a hiatus.
“It’s good to be home,” she told viewers at the time in the episode in which she returned for the first time after her mother’s disappearance. “Break the news whether you’re ready or not.”
