“Monopoly” is about to become even more realistic.
Netflix has announced casting for a new competition series based in the world of Monopoly, where contestants have a chance to win $2 million.
Twelve players use strategy, alliances, and deals to win prizes in a life-sized Monopoly Town Square. With the opportunity to earn money, buy real estate, and negotiate deals, participants must strive to survive as bankrupt players are eliminated and only one player survives.
“Monopoly” is set to premiere in the fall of 2027 and will be produced by Studio Lambert, which also produced Netflix competition shows “Squid Game: The Challenge” and “The Circle,” in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment.
Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano and Zachary Edwin will executive produce Monopoly, along with Studio Lambert’s Nia Yemo, Tim Harcourt, Jack Burgess, Stephen Lambert and Kim Murphy.
Hasbro Entertainment also announced a deal with LuckyChap and Lionsgate to produce films based on Monopoly, with Lionsgate and LuckyChap looking to build on the success they’ve had with Barbie, a Mattel property. The company is also working on a live-action “Dungeons & Dragons” series currently in development at Netflix, as well as both scripted and unscripted re-imaginings of “Clues” for film and television.
“Monopoly” joins the world of board game adaptations with “Wonka’s Golden Ticket,” an unscripted adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” which premieres on September 23.
Monopoly debuted in 1935 and has since sold more than 275 million copies worldwide.
