South Korean director Na Hong-jin will make his San Diego Comic-Con debut at a panel commemorating his latest film “Hope.” The film premiered in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and will be released by Neon in the US this September.
A special panel will feature an exclusive introduction from Korean breakout star Hoyoung (“Squid Game”) and an in-depth conversation with Na. Participants will also be able to see new footage from the film.
“Hope” takes place in the remote village of Hope Harbor, where a mysterious creature has wreaked havoc. Police and local hunters set out to track the beast, only to find themselves being hunted in reverse. But not everything is as it seems.
“I’m honored to join Comic-Con’s legendary list of panelists. There’s no other place like it. I’m excited to share my work and introduce my new film Hope, a passion project ten years in the making, to one of the world’s greatest audiences. Please join me before it opens in U.S. theaters in September. See you in San Diego!” Na said in a statement.
Critics praised Hope at Cannes, with Variety’s Jessica Kiang calling it “one of the best and funniest action movies I’ve ever seen.”
The film made its North American debut as a centerpiece at the New York Asian Film Festival, and director Na also won the NYAFF Daniel A. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Films. Na’s debut film The Chaser (2008) was screened out of competition at the 61st Cannes Film Festival and was a critical and commercial success, winning numerous Korean film awards and becoming the third-highest grossing Korean film of the year. His next two feature films, The Yellow Sea (2010) and Lamentation (2016), were also selected to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
