No major new releases were released Friday, but “Michael” moonwalked to the top of the box office charts.
Lionsgate’s “Michael” earned $7 million domestically on Friday and is expected to earn an impressive $25 million to $28 million by Sunday. This represents a decrease of approximately 27% from last weekend’s revenue. The biopic about the life and times of the King of Pop has shown great staying power since its record-setting $97 million debut. It is expected to gross approximately $283 million in North America by the end of its fourth weekend.
Focus Features’ new horror film “Obsession” was shown in 2,615 theaters on its opening day, earning $6.89 million at the domestic box office and coming in second place. It is expected to gross a solid $14.5 million by the end of the week. “Obsession,” from writer and director Currie Barker, is about a desperate young man who uses “One Wish Willow” to make his crush fall in love with him. He gets exactly what he wants, but his deepest desires come at a deadly price. Cast members include Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, Andy Richter, and Hayley Fitzgerald.
20th Century Studios’ The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened in North American theaters on the third Friday and came in at number three with $5.3 million. The high-fashion sequel, starring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt, is expected to have grossed about $20 million by Sunday, and its domestic gross is expected to reach $177 million by its first three weekends. Considering the international box office, “Prada 2” officially surpassed $500 million in worldwide box office receipts on Friday.
Warner Bros. and New Line’s “Mortal Kombat II” grossed $3.7 million at the domestic box office on Friday, dropping it to fourth place among second films. This is a significant 79% drop from the first day. The bloody, violent action movie should collect about $12.7 million over the weekend, bringing its North American total to about $61 million.
In fifth place was Amazon MGM’s “The Sheep Detectives,” which added $2.45 million domestically on Friday. The family-friendly criminal should collect $10 million by its second Sunday in theaters, taking its North American total to $30 million.
