Meryl Streep admitted that she and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour are distant cousins while promoting her long-awaited film The Devil Wears Prada 2.
On Wednesday, “Today” host Jenna Bush Hager told the “Mama Mia” star on the “Open Book” podcast, “…it turns out you guys are fifth cousins or something.”
Streep explained the connection between Hagar and co-stars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, noting that their family roots are in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
“We are an Old English Wilkinson family on my mother’s side,” she said. “It’s quite interesting.”
Streep revealed that she didn’t know about the family connection until recently, and joked that if she had known, she might have “copied” Wintour’s mannerisms in the movie.
“Maybe she’s copying me,” the “Only Murders in the Building” star joked.
Blunt and Tucci looked incredulous, but Streep playfully added, “Do something.”
Earlier this month, Today revealed that Streep and Wintour, both 76, share fifth great-grandparents, Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Kinsey, and are sixth cousins.
This iconic duo has worked together for years, ever since the release of The Devil Wears Prada in 2006.
Streep played Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of Runway, a fashion magazine widely believed to have been inspired by Wintour.
The film was inspired by a novel written by Wintour’s former junior assistant, Lauren Weisberger.
Streep and Wintour recently teamed up to promote the film’s sequel, and Variety reported that they were spotted mingling at Milan Fashion Week 2025 last September.
The actress also convinced Wintour to appear on the May cover of Vogue wearing Prada.
At the time, the fashion legend was ecstatic about Wintour playing the role, saying: “It’s such an honor for Meryl to play the role, no matter how far away Miranda is from me. Who wouldn’t think that wouldn’t be the most special gift.”
The Devil Wears Prada 2 will be released in theaters on May 1st.
