Locals on the Italian island of Sicily are protesting Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s three-day wedding which led to the city being shut down.
Photos obtained by the Daily Mail show a heavy police presence outside Palermo’s Valgarnera Ganj Palace. The couple, who tied the knot in a small ceremony in London last weekend, will host a lavish cocktail reception on Friday.
Authorities reportedly threw iron rings around several town squares, including Piazza Sant’Anna and Piazza Croce dei Vespri, which are closed to the public during the wedding weekend.
In addition, roads were closed, a no-drone zone was established and residents were required to sign non-disclosure agreements, The Sun reported.
Angry locals protested the couple’s wedding by pasting dozens of posters in both English and Italian in the town square.
Part of the poster read, “Palermo is not for rent.”
Some people say, “Our square is not your living room” or “Palermo is not for rich people.”
After wedding organizers reportedly tore down the banner, protesters fired back Friday morning by graffitiing the same words on a wall.
Concetta Ciremi, a local who runs a shop in Palermo, told the Guardian that the wedding celebrations made the city feel like a “theme park”.
Another woman, Clarissa, who owns a bar near Chiremi’s shop, said the wedding had “caused a lot of problems” for city residents.
“For example, for three days we had to park miles away and walk to work,” Clarissa told the outlet. “It’s not right to lock down a city. I can understand if it’s for the pope, but not for the singer.”
The Sun reports that the three-day wedding will cost $1.73 million (£1.3 million).
Page Six has reached out to Ripa and Turner’s representatives for comment.
As Page Six previously reported, Ripa, 30, and Turner, 36, are scheduled to have a formal wedding ceremony on Saturday at Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria, Sicily, near Palermo.
“It’s going to be a huge, super extravagant affair,” a source told us. “They booked a hotel so all of their guests could stay together, celebrate in private, and enjoy the weekend.”
It was also said that Elton John’s name was being discussed as a potential cast member.
Ripa and Turner were spotted out and about in Palermo on Thursday ahead of their wedding weekend.
The “Levitating” singer wore a white button-down shirt with a striped cloth tied around his waist and a baseball cap worn backwards, while the “Eternity” actor walked next to her in a brown collared shirt and white shorts.
The pair officially became husband and wife in an intimate ceremony at London’s Old Marylebone Town Hall last Sunday afternoon.
Ripa wore custom Schiaparelli haute couture, while Turner looked dapper in a navy Ferragamo suit. The couple were surrounded by their loved ones and confetti was thrown as the bride and groom made their way out of the venue.
Ripa and Turner sparked romance rumors in early 2024, going public at an Apple TV+ afterparty in January of the same year.
After months of speculation, the Grammy winner confirmed his engagement to Turner in a cover interview with British Vogue in June 2025.
“Yeah, we’re engaged,” she told the magazine. “It’s very exciting.”
