Robert Carradine was admitted to a psychiatric hospital several weeks before his tragic death.
The “Lizzie McGuire” star entered a Los Angeles facility before his death, and employees found him unresponsive and in cardiac arrest a day later, according to an L.A. County coroner’s report obtained by TMZ.
Attempts were made to resuscitate him, but he ultimately died several weeks later.
The report also revealed that after the beloved actor’s death, his daughter told investigators that her father had suffered from mental illness for about 20 years and had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
At the time of his death, Carradine suffered from persistent suicidal thoughts, suffered from severe depression and anxiety, and was on multiple medications, the ME report said.
As Page Six previously reported, the “Revenge of the Nerds” star took his own life in February after struggling with his mental health for 20 years. He was 71 years old.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine,” the family said in a statement to Deadline on February 23.
“In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to those around him. We are saddened by the loss of this beautiful soul and would like to pay tribute to Bobby’s courageous fight against bipolar disorder for nearly 20 years.”
Days later, Page Six exclusively reported that Carradine’s cause of death was the aftereffects of anoxic brain injury caused by hanging. His body was later released to his family.
Robert was first diagnosed with bipolar disorder after his brother David died of suffocation in 2009.
Robert’s brother, actor Keith Carradine, also said in a statement from the family that the family shared the sad news because they wanted to raise awareness about mental health.
“We want people to know that, there’s no shame in it,” Keith said. “This disease was the one that took the most out of him and I want to honor his fight against it and celebrate his beautiful soul.
“He was deeply gifted. We will miss him every day. We will take comfort in knowing how funny he was, how wise he was, and how completely accepting and forgiving he was. That was my baby brother.”
Robert had a daughter, Ever Carradine, with actress Susan Snyder in 1974. He later married Edith Manni and had two children, Marika and Ian, but the couple divorced after 25 years together.
According to the death certificate, the actor was cremated and his ashes were scattered at sea.
