New Europe Film Sales has closed the first pre-sale for Nina and the God of Thunder, a new 3D family animation with a production budget of 7.5 million euros (approximately $877 million).
French rights were acquired by KMBO, a leading animation distributor whose releases include Ozi: Voice of the Forest, 10 Lives, and The Amazing Maurice. New Europe is in talks with more distributors and plans to close more territories in Cannes.
“Nina and the God of Thunder,” touted as this year’s Cartoon Movie, is scheduled to begin production in 2027 and be released in the second half of 2029.
This is the first feature film directed by Kamil Pollak, whose 2011 animated short “The Lost Town of Świteź” was selected for the Berlinale and won the 1st Film Award at the Annecy International Film Festival.
Nina and the Goddess of Thunder is an adventure film set in the world of Slavic mythology, set in the primeval forests of Białowieża, Poland in the 10th century. This is the story of Pernica, a rebellious young goddess. Pernica accidentally drops her father’s hammer, needed to create the sun, and flies to Earth to retrieve it. There she must team up with local inventor Nina and bring back the hammer before the universe freezes and falls into eternal darkness.
The film was written by popular Polish comedians Agnieszka Matan and Joanna Pawlskiewicz, and developed by New Europe’s Jan Naszewski with support from the Polish Film Institute and Creative Europe Media.
The film will be co-produced by Poland’s New Europe and PFX, Luxembourg’s Fabrik Diimages and Spain’s Doce Entertainment.
