On Monday night’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart criticized President Donald Trump’s response to the press following the death of Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. Mr. Graham passed away on July 11th at the age of 71.
“The big news of the weekend was the sudden passing of Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina,” Stewart said at the beginning of the show. “Obviously, I knew him a little bit from lobbying on Capitol Hill, but I didn’t know him particularly well. So I’m going to let Lindsey Graham’s best friend pay tribute to the late senator.”
Stewart then cut out audio of Trump talking to Fox & Friends hosts, saying on the phone: “He was a great guy and a friend. He would call me all the time. He would just say, ‘Lindsay, stop calling me.'”
“‘I’ll never forget that we always left him on voicemail. That was our job,'” Stewart joked. “Obviously he’s just starting his eulogy in a light-hearted way, and I’m sure the poignancy will follow.”
The show then cut back on President Trump’s response. In several phone interviews with NBC, CNN, Fox News and others, he said, “He loved golf. He loved being outside. He wasn’t a great striker with the ball. He wasn’t — not perfect. It wasn’t Jack Nicklaus. He was totally against me. He said, ‘I’ll take you to South Carolina.’ It was a terrible campaign. He was tough and mean. I wanted to see the war with Ukraine end quickly. I think he was more into keeping it going, frankly. He was a complete workaholic politician. Some people don’t even call it work. Some people say it’s “too much talk.” ”
And Stewart said, “Well, I think the president got past the first five stages of grief and went straight to stage six. Fuck that guy.”
