Joe Manganiello has revealed that he has a life-threatening autoimmune-related disease that resulted in his leg being amputated.
In the synopsis for the “Spider-Man” actor’s upcoming memoir, “Bloodlines,” he said he dealt with “a series of autoimmune-related diseases” that affected the thyroid, digestive system, skin, lungs and eyes.
During his seven-year battle, the 49-year-old Manganiello dealt with “chronic pain, the amputation of life-saving organs, existential crises, and a prolonged struggle for survival with few answers or clear explanations from doctors.”
When doctors couldn’t explain what was happening to the “Magic Mike” star, he turned to unconventional treatments.
Manganiello sought relief from his illness by using “shamans, pagan rituals, ancient myths, long-lost family records, and the rebirth of his own spirituality.”
The actor also dug deep into his family tree, discovering ancestors who survived the Armenian Genocide and others who lived with chronic illnesses.
“It was the cruelest and most difficult time of my life, something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but it was also my greatest adventure,” Manganiello told People in a statement.
“I hope that what I have experienced on this journey can give readers hope that there may be answers and healing on the other side of what they are fighting for,” he added.
“The process of writing this book gave me the gift of perspective that helped me understand that my suffering is a cocoon that emerges forever changed.”
It’s unclear when the “True Blood” alum dealt with the illness.
Manganiello was previously married to Sofia Vergara from 2015 to 2024. Manganiello and the “Griselda” star, 53, divorced because they did not want to have any more children.
Manganiello posed the question to Catlin O’Connor in June 2025.
“Bloodlines” will be released on October 13th.
