Before Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos make their debut as honorary co-chairs and major financial sponsors of the Met Gala on Monday, the couple plans to hold court at a private pre-party over the weekend.
The email invitation to Saturday night’s soiree has the subject line “INVITE: Jeff and Lauren Bezos Invite You.”
Inside, a disco-inspired image features a profile of someone with only their nose and slightly open mouth showing. The lipstick is red and has lots of glitter in it. The invitation reads, “Pre-Met Celebration May 2nd at 8 p.m.” “Address: Please check before coming.”
Sources said the party could be held at the Bezoses’ New York City mansion. Representatives for the couple had no comment.
Although nothing has been announced yet on the pre-party guest list, this year’s Met Gala has come under fire after a famous couple were announced as lead sponsors of the “Costume Art” gala and exhibition and named honorary co-chairs.
Earlier this month, a poster campaign was launched across New York City calling for a boycott of the Bezos Met Gala. The posters have ties to guerrilla activist groups, refer to the “exploitation of workers” at Amazon warehouses, and allude to the tech giant’s reported support for the Department of Homeland Security in a spate of deportations.
Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Anna Wintour are among the co-chairs of the Met Gala, which has a “fashion is art” dress code.
News of Bezos’ pre-party comes after Variety reported that Emily Blunt’s character in The Devil Wears Prada 2 bears a “very strong resemblance” to Bezos Sanchez, while the billionaire tech tycoon’s partner, played by Justin Theroux, is said to be a combination of Bezos and Elon Musk.
The film did well at the box office, with opening weekend ticket sales estimated at $75 million to $80 million, with some predictions for it to be even higher, at $90 million to $100 million.
