The Today show is “implementing stricter security protocols” following last week’s horrific security breach in which an intruder targeting Al Roker broke into the studio and confronted Craig Melvin on the morning of July 16.
All of the new protocols were outlined in an email sent Wednesday, according to Variety.
“We wanted to give you an important update regarding studio access for the Today interview,” the email read. “In light of recent events over the past week, we are implementing stricter security protocols effective immediately.”
“Going forward, each guest will be allowed a maximum of two people in the studio,” the email continued. “This includes anyone accompanying the guest, including PR personnel, hair and make-up, social media, photographers, stylists, studio representatives, and other support staff. Who these two individuals will be is at your discretion, but no exceptions or additional personnel will be allowed in the studio during the interview.”
The July 16 intruder, identified as Andrew Truelove, slipped past security at the NBC show’s New York headquarters and asked Melvin where Roker was.
True Love approached Melvin on the stairs inside the studio, and the two reportedly had an 8-10 second exchange. Meanwhile, True Love called the host the N-word.
Melvin immediately called security and Truelove was arrested.
Following the incident, Melvin released a statement on Instagram, assuring fans that he was “doing well.”
Page Six exclusively reported that the NBC show’s staff has been on edge since the break-in.
One source called the incident “appalling” and “insane” and said: “He could have stabbed Craig. He could have planted a bomb.”
As a result of our investigation, we reported that the security guard who allowed this maniac into the building has been fired.
Officials said security video showed two security guards on duty at the time of the break-in. However, one of the guards left and the other guard missed Truelove slipping in.
True Love faced numerous hate crime charges for the break-in, including hate crime threats, hate crime robbery, hate crime criminal trespassing, and harassment charges. His bail was set at $10,000, The Post confirmed.
Additionally, both Roker and Melvin were granted protective orders against him.
