Cinema Guild has acquired the North American distribution rights to The Day She Returns, the latest feature film directed by acclaimed Korean author Hong Sang-soo. The film will have its world premiere today at the 76th Berlin Film Festival, marking Hong’s seventh consecutive appearance at the festival.

In “The Day She Returns,” Song Seon-mi plays the role of an actress who leaves the acting industry after marriage and divorce and makes a comeback with an independent film.

Sunmi will star opposite longtime co-stars Cho Yoon Hee (The Day After) and Park Mi So (Introduction).

“Hong Sang-soo’s magic is limitless,” said Peter Kelly, president of the Cinema Guild, which negotiated the contract with Fine Cut’s Young-Ju Soo. “Watching ‘The Day She Comes Home’ felt like rediscovering that magic all over again,” he continued. A prolific filmmaker, Hong Sang-soo has written and directed 34 feature films and several shorts since 1996. “The Day She Returns” was produced by his company, Zengensha Film Company.

Cinema Guild is a leading distributor of international films, independent films, and documentaries. Upcoming releases include Hong Sang-soo’s “What Does That Nature Say to You” and Aleksandr Kobelidze’s “Dry Leaf.”

The company recently released a 4K restoration of director Joan César Monteiro, Marta Matthäus’ The Flame of the Wind, Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich’s The Ballad of Suzanne Césaire, Hong Sang-soo’s The Bank of the Stream, and a retrospective of French New Wave filmmaker Luc Mouret.

The 76th Berlin Film Festival opens on February 12th with the world premiere of Shahbanu Sadat’s No Good Men and concludes on February 22nd.
