Steven Schneider, whose credits include Hokum, Undertones and Paranormal Activity, is executive producing Recruit through his indie label Spooky Pictures.
Henry Chaisson’s debut film will have its world premiere in the Escape from Tribeca section at the Tribeca Film Festival next month.
The film centers on Joan, a sound recorder who lives a lonely life as she returns to her father’s mansion after a devastating fire. Following a series of ghostly audio snippets, she uncovers a buried family secret and the person who wants to keep it that way.
Sasha Florova (The Empty Man) leads the cast along with Xander Berkeley (Terminator 2, The Walking Dead) and Toby Poser (Hellbender), with Mia Valletta, Kimball Farley, and Frankie Seracci in supporting roles.
“‘The Recluse’ is a powerhouse of pure nightmare, blending chilling storytelling, striking visuals and unforgettable sound design to deliver a fully immersive horror experience. With this fearless and raucous debut, Henry is emerging as the next great horror auteur, and as the film begins its festival journey, it’s a thrill to accompany it on that journey,” said Schneider.
Chaisson wrote and directed the film, which he co-produced with Josh Lobo, Gillian Cooper, Katarina Windemuth, Alex Dandino, and Rowan Russell. Co-produced by Andrew Merrill, Beth Crudel, and Jada Park. Kyla O’Shea and Frolova served as additional executive producers. “Recluse” is a co-production between Points North Films and Restricted Pictures, who are currently working on projects in the “Night After Night” genre.
Spooky Pictures was co-founded in 2020 by Schneider and Roy Lee (It, The Ring), with a focus on high-concept, low-budget genre films. The label’s credits include “Strange Darling,” “Late Night with the Devil,” and “The Plague,” which debuted in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. Other projects planned include “The Shepherd,” starring and produced by David Dastmalchian. Neon acquires Damian McCarthy’s ‘Hokum’. “Menace” directed by Randall Okita, starring Isabel May. and Brian Edward Hill’s “Archangel.”
Blue Finch Films is handling worldwide sales.
