The Academy of Motion Picture Museum has added three industry heavyweights to its board of directors, including Broadway producer giant John Gore, blockbuster producer Gale Anne Hurd, and Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro.
The trio will join the organization that governs the museum’s long-term financial health and governance, and its bylaws will take effect from July 1.
Mr. Gore, founder and executive chairman of John Gore Studios, has won 27 Tony Awards, the most in history, along with two Olivier Awards and two Emmy Awards. His London-based studio is part of the Broadway and live theater giant John Gore Organization, whose properties include Broadway Across America and Broadway.com, and has produced touring productions of “Wicked,” “Hamilton,” and Disney’s “The Lion King” across North America. He has been named one of Variety magazine’s 500 Most Influential Business Leaders in Media for five consecutive years.
Hurd produced “Alien,” “The Abyss,” “Armageddon,” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” the last of which joined “The Terminator” on the National Film Registry, resulting in a filmography filled with classics of the genre. In television, he is executive producer of AMC’s zombie series The Walking Dead and its expanded universe. Ms Heard, a former member of the Academy’s Board of Governors, recently received the WomanInFan Lifetime Achievement Award at the Sitges Film Festival.
Del Toro is a Mexican-born author with a unique blend of horror and fantasy, and his films have won a total of 11 Academy Awards. He won Best Picture and Best Director for The Shape of Water, which he wrote and directed, and won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. His last feature, Frankenstein, co-starring Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, was nominated for nine Oscars and won three for costume design, art design, and makeup and hairstyling.
“We are pleased to welcome John Gore, Gale Anne Hurd, and Guillermo del Toro to the Academy Museum Board of Directors,” said Amy Homma, Academy Museum and Academy Collection Director and Chair. “Their diverse perspectives will help us continue to expand the Museum’s impact around the world. We look forward to working with them to advance the Academy Museum’s mission and build momentum for the future.”
