Film Independent is expanding its Film Independent Spirit Awards with the introduction of the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award. The award is a new honor that recognizes feature films and television productions that address environmental issues through innovative and impactful storytelling.
Established in partnership with the Redford Center, the award celebrates unique American narrative feature film and television projects that explore environmental themes, from climate change and environmental justice to conservation efforts, indigenous knowledge systems, and technological innovations aimed at addressing ecological challenges.
The new category is designed to emphasize creativity, possibility, and audience engagement, and focus on stories that go beyond traditional environmental narratives. Eligible works may focus directly on environmental issues or feature protagonists whose journeys are deeply intertwined with environmental issues.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Redford Center to launch the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award to celebrate the power of independent filmmakers to inspire hope and real action through storytelling,” said Sean Davis, executive producer of the Film Independent Spirit Awards. “This award aligns with our mission to champion bold, innovative voices that challenge and redefine how we approach the world’s most pressing issues.”
Named in honor of actor, director, and environmental activist Robert Redford, the award aims to continue his tradition of supporting independent artists and elevating stories that have the potential to influence public understanding and action.
“Robert Redford believed strongly in the power of storytelling to change the way people see the world, and championed the bold independent filmmakers who brought those stories to life,” said Jill Tidman, executive director of the Redford Center. “He elevated overlooked voices and focused on urgent issues. This award honors his legacy by recognizing outstanding storytelling that deepens understanding of environmental issues and inspires action.”
According to Film Independent, submissions will be evaluated based on criteria that reflect both the mission of the Spirit Awards and the specific goals of the new category. The judges will evaluate the originality, diversity of perspectives, innovation of storytelling, and strength of each project’s environmental theme. Priority will be given to works that take an entertainment-first approach, encouraging audiences to envision solutions and possibilities through engaging characters and stories.
The winner of the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award, along with the remaining Spirit Award nominees, will be announced in December, followed by the 2027 Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony on March 6th.
Entries for the 2027 Spirit Awards will open on August 18, with jury meetings and deliberations scheduled for September and October.
