The country music community is coming together to become its own musical community.
Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, who form the popular duo Dan + Shay, shared an update on their friend Jelly Roll’s status amid his headline-grabbing divorce from Bunny Zoe.
“I actually met him the other day. Yeah, I met him,” Smyers exclusively told Page Six on Tuesday night at the Reese’s Tight Ends & Friends concert in Nashville.
“He was great,” he continued. “We didn’t get along very well, but I’m happy for him.”
Smyers also criticized Jelly Roll in a social media post he shared earlier in the day in which the “Son of a Sinner” singer reflected on his fitness journey.
“His post was great,” he exclaimed. “I was like, ‘Damn, that’s my guy.’ It was cool.”
Meanwhile, Mooney praised the response over the past week since news of Jelly Roll and Bunny’s divorce shocked country music fans in Music City and around the world.
“They dealt with this issue in class. It’s very difficult to go through this in public,” he told Page Six on Tuesday night at an event hosted by Sports Illustrated and Tight End University.
“I mean, as married people, if we have to go through something like that in public, it’s really tough on both of us, but we both handled it well,” Mooney said. “We want the best for both of them. They’re great.”
Page Six confirmed on June 15 that Jelly Roll had secretly filed for divorce from Bunny about a month prior to their marriage in August 2016 after nearly 10 years of marriage.
In their May 18 filing, the Grammy winners cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their breakup.
Jelly Roll broke their silence about their divorce mid-concert during a performance of their Little Us Shed tour in Saratoga Springs, New York on June 18th.
“This is the only place we’re going to talk about this, this is the only place we’re going to talk about this in this city, so break out your camera phone right now,” he told the audience in a video obtained by Page Six.
“My wife and I are best friends and always will be,” he continued, noting that Bunny “will probably be the only woman I’ve ever loved the way I loved her” and that “none of us have ever cheated on anyone.”
The country superstar then interjected into Bunny’s “Dumb Blonde” podcast episode (which was released earlier that night) and addressed her shocking divorce.
“Every word of it is true,” he said of his estranged wife telling his side of the story. “It’s my best friend forever. This is the only time I talk about it. Bunny, I love you, baby.”
In an episode of her podcast, Bunny opened up about the fight that led to their breakup and put an end to rumors that she was dating Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger.
Elsewhere in the hour-long recording session, Bunny revealed that she and Jelly Roll still plan to have children, even though her estranged husband is already dating again.
The former couple don’t have any children yet, but Jelly Roll is father to daughter Bailey Ann, 18, and son Noah Buddy, 9.
