Like father, like daughter.
Beyoncé shared the sweet backstory behind where Jay-Z rocked for nearly a decade in a Cécred video posted to YouTube on Father’s Day.
The film chronicles the multi-day process of getting her hair styled, interwoven with family snapshots and clips of the singer and her eldest daughter Blue Ivy getting their hair done together. In a voiceover, Beyoncé explains that rock is never just about appearances.
“My daughter was about 5 years old and she wasn’t very confident with her hair at the time,” the Grammy winner said. “That’s what inspired Jay to grow his hair out.”
“Five-year-old Blue had no idea that his father’s hair had a texture similar to his,” she added. “I always thought it was beautiful that the real reason Jay grew his hair long was to show Blue that her hair was just like his.”
Blue Ivy, now 14, has been exposed to intense public scrutiny since she was a child. That included mean comments online about her natural curls as a toddler.
“We wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls,” Beyoncé said.
She went on to narrate Matthew A. Cherry’s “Hair Love” audiobook and provided vocals to her mother’s songs “Formation” and “Brown Skin Girl,” the latter of which won a Grammy Award.
The rapper has done a lot of research on his hairstyle for his first solo performance since 2019 as he headlines the 2026 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on May 30th, choosing an afro as a tribute to his late father, Adonis Reeves, who wore the style.
Beyoncé called the multi-day detangling process, which Blue helped with along with Jay-Z’s hairstylist Nakia Collins, a “family affair.” The “Halo” singer launched her hair care brand in February 2024, and her husband has been a loyal customer ever since.
“Jay took better care of his hair than anyone I know,” the singer said of her husband. “He washes his hair religiously.”
