Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are coming to the big screen. The new “Powerpuff Girls” movie is in development at Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, and the company released it Monday at the current Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.
Studio officials have confirmed that a Powerpuff Girls movie is in the works, but stressed that no deal has been signed.
Plot details for the upcoming adventure have not yet been announced as it does not have the green light at this time. Based on the Cartoon Network series, “The Powerpuff Girls” revolves around three girls with superpowers. These were created by Professor Utonium using a nice mixture of sugar, spices, and everything else. According to legend, he accidentally spilled a mysterious ingredient called Chemical X into the mixture, and the Powerpuff Girls were born. The trio, who have “dedicated their lives to fighting the forces of crime and evil,” use their powers to take down the villains of the City of Townsville.
“The Powerpuff Girls” first aired in 1998 and ran for six seasons, ending in 2005. Warner Bros. previously produced a big-screen adaptation of the show, 2002’s “The Powerpuff Girls Movie,” which failed at $16 million on a budget of $11 million. The show also spawned a 2016 reboot series and an ill-fated live-action version that never aired.
Warner Bros. Animation’s next theatrical project is “The Cat in the Hat,” which will be released in November, starring Bill Hader as the voice of the titular troublemaker. The company has slated “Bad Fairies” starring Cynthia Erivo, “Margie Claus” with Melissa McCarthy, and “Oh the Place You’ll Go” starring Ariana Grande and Josh Gad for 2027 and beyond.
