Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for the two-episode series premiere of “Dutton Ranch,” “The Untold Want,” and “Earn Another Day,” currently streaming on Paramount+.
“Yellowstone” fans, enjoy! We’ve been missing out on the primetime drama since it ended in 2024. Sure, there was “Marshall,” but considering it was more of a procedural, “Dutton Ranch” would carry the torch for the western. Notably, the show stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, reprising their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, both of whom broke out in Yellowstone.
At the end of “Yellowstone,” the lovebirds, along with their adopted son Carter (Finn Little), move to a small ranch near Dillon, Montana, so Dutton can focus on the land without the responsibilities of his name. However, within minutes of the “Dutton Ranch” their property burned down, and six months later they were forced to move to the fictional town of Rio Paloma. But the cast includes icons like Ed Harris and Annette Bening, so there’s no doubt the drama will get in the way of their fresh start. Dive into the two-episode premiere with all your stray thoughts and burning questions.
Episode 1 “Unspoken Wish”
I love Beth’s riding gear! New look. Lip, on the other hand, continues to stick to classic styles. Damn, I always forget how gorgeous the “Yellowstone” poetry show is. I could just go outside and stare at nature all day long. Kudos to veteran director and cinematographer Christina Alexandra Volos for her incredible eye. “I’m never going to let this go.” Oh, Dutton should never have said those words! Wow, that fire quickly got out of control! Carter seems like an adult. Adolescence is in full swing! This score is a real nod to “Yellowstone” and sounds pretty good. Rip’s cat-saving moment is saving that cute calf. sweet! Time jump! I enjoy the economy of this storytelling. Wow, Rob Will (Jai Courtney) is a mustache-twirling villain from the get-go! Wait, did Robwill kill Wes (Nakoa Dequoit) for investigating tampering with the tally books? Seems like too much… What kind of baggage does Rob Will have? He almost cried while confronting Wes! Oh, Robwill is drinking coke. Abbreviation for spiral out. Why is Chet (Hart Denton) so willing to help Rob Will with his dirty work? Welcome to the show, Beulah Jackson (Benning)! Your wardrobe is already amazing. Oh, Robwill is Beulah’s son and she’s the new John Dutton. Understood. I feel really bad for Azul (JR Villarreal). I like him. For the love of Carter, you don’t need to see him flirting in high school. Focus on adult dramas! Rob Will, please don’t be mean to our best friend Azure! Courtney does a great job of making Rob Will absolutely unbearable! I hate him! Oh, that lip punch felt so good. It’s funny to watch Beth not get what she wants! Show us 100 more scenes of her arguing with Beulah. Interesting fact for “Real Housewives” fans: Bartender Carol is played by Morgan Wade, a close “friend” of Kyle Richards. Is Ed Harris’ character Everett McKinney an older version of Beth? With this introduction, it looks like that will be possible. Wow, Beth can’t shoot horses…Character development warning! “I hate racists.” Wow, did Rip just wake up? Oh, is this girl just using Carter to buy beer? Boo! Beth’s intuition was right! I’m glad they saved the horse. Carter immediately went into rip mode and beat the crap out of this abusive guy. But something tells him it’s not going to work out for him in Texas… “I miss him,” Beth recalls of her father, who had one of TV’s most boring deaths. Who is Carter’s actual love interest? interesting! Welcome to the show, Oleanna (Natalie Alyn Lind). Oh, and the shower scene with Lip and Beth? It’s been a while since they’ve had any level of intimacy. Good for you! With a brother like Robwill, poor Joaquín (Juan Pablo Raba) is going to be very busy being the family fixer. Where does Beulah’s family dispose of her body? Do they have their own equivalent of a “railway station”? Robwill, what a lazy place to bury bodies!
Episode 2 “Let’s earn another day”“
Rip, don’t reveal the murder secret to Beth. She will smell you! Don’t you hate it when a poorly buried body gets up and leaves? “God Loves Cowboys.” Can You Buy That Cross Stitch on Etsy? Whitney (Olivia Rose Keegan) seems intent on completing her search for Wes. I hope she doesn’t get killed too! Nice Dwyer Yoakam needle drop. I wish this show had as much country music as “Yellowstone.” Oh, Oleanna is in trouble! How old is she exactly? She shouldn’t bring beer to high school! Chet is really stupid. Bringing a branding iron into a fight? lame! All of that meat looked great. Shall we get some steak on DoorDash? Hey, Beulah is cold as ice! Fun trivia: Mark Menchaca, the actor who plays Zacharias, is married to Lena Headey. Small world! What, Oleanna has a boyfriend!? Poor Carter is going to become an incel at this rate. The fact that a lot of Spanish is spoken on this show makes it feel authentic. I’m glad the creative team didn’t shy away from that. Oleanna is Beulah’s granddaughter and Robwill’s daughter!? Oops! It’s funny how much is happening to Carter that Rip and Beth don’t hear about. He was in jail just a few hours ago! Oh, I love that Everett is just a sweet cowboy veteran who sings country songs. Keep him around! Zakaria has a ridiculous mustache. respect. Wait, what’s in the freezer? Ah, Wes’ body. strict!
