Benny Blanco spoke about the conversations he had with Selena Gomez before going public with their secret relationship in December 2023. He revealed that his then-girlfriend was out if he didn’t want to deal with the attention that dating her would bring. Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco were friendly collaborators for years before they began dating privately in the summer of 2023. Gomez went public with their relationship that December, but stopped short of having serious discussions with Blanco about letting him out if he wanted.
The music producer spoke to El Pais’ Icon magazine about what Gomez asked her fans before revealing their relationship.
“We kept our relationship private for a long time, eight or nine months,” he said in a Spanish-language interview. “And she asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do that? I understand if you want us to just be friends.’ Then I said, ‘No.’ We’re lucky because we have friends and family who knew us before all of this happened and we’re surrounded by a good group of people we love.”
He also talked about his experiences with fame, including the moment he started gaining attention as a producer. “It was between 2018 and 2019,” he recalled. “I released my song (his first solo song, ‘Eastside’) and it became really popular. So I started getting a little bit of fame. From there, things got really intense. I remember talking to my manager and telling him I wanted to slow down a little bit. That same month, I started dating Selena, and then it was like a rocket-like boost to what I was going through. She’s been dealing with this her whole life, so it’s something we have to face together.”
He said that fame is generally “a necessary evil for those I love, including my wife.”
Blanco and Gomez eventually married in September 2025. He told an interviewer that he wanted to propose soon after they started dating.
“The second time we hung out, the second date, I was like, ‘Wait, does she like me?’ I was clueless,” he prefaced. “From then on, it was easy. You think you’ve met the right person and you think, ‘Oh my God.’ But it feels so different. The moment we started dating, I thought, ‘This is my wife.’ I said to my mother, “This is the woman I am going to marry.” ”
