Benny Blanco set the record straight when he started a secret romance with his wife Selena Gomez.
“We kept our relationship secret for a long time, about eight or nine months,” the music producer told Spanish newspaper El Pais.
Blanco said the “Calm Down” singer asked her if she was “sure” she wanted a relationship.
“And she asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do that? I understand if you want us to just be friends,'” he recalled.
“And I said, ‘You know what? This is messed up,'” the songwriter added.
“We’re lucky because we have friends and family who knew us before all of this happened and we’re surrounded by a good group of people we love.”
Blanco also touched on how she deals with “public scrutiny” while married to Gomez, who is the third most-followed girl in the world on Instagram after soccer players Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi.
“I don’t like exposing my life. Celebrities are always under scrutiny. If you say one thing, it’s wrong, and if you say something else, it’s wrong,” he said.
“I would like to have more privacy. I think it will work out over the years. I belong to a transitional generation where social media didn’t exist when I was growing up,” Blanco added.
“I might occasionally post a photo of my wife or a delicious dish I’ve tried, but I rarely post anything on Instagram that isn’t work-related.”
Gomez, 33, and Blanco, 38, first hinted at a romance in July 2023, when the producer attended Gomez’s 31st birthday celebration.
In December of the same year, the “Only Murders in the Building” star admitted that she had been secretly dating Blanco for six months.
A year later, Gomez announced that she was engaged to Blanco.
“Eternity begins now,” the Emilia Perez actress captioned a carousel of photos showing off a diamond sparkler.
In September 2025, Blanco and Gomez tied the knot in a romantic ceremony at the lush Seacrest Nursery in Santa Barbara, California.
The bride and groom glammed up Ralph Lauren, with the pop star wearing a custom hand-draped halter satin dress with embroidery, and Blanco wearing a classic black tuxedo and bow tie.
The couple exchanged vows in front of several stars, including Ed Sheeran, Martin Short, Steve Martin, Paul Rudd, Paris Hilton, Zoe Saldaña, SZA, and the bride’s best friend Taylor Swift.
After the wedding, the newlyweds enjoyed a “perfect” honeymoon, a road trip along the California and Texas coasts.
