Aubrey Plaza announced on Instagram Saturday afternoon that Amazon has canceled her animated comedy series “Kevin” after just one season.
“Amazon Prime will not be releasing another season of ‘Kevin,'” Plaza wrote. “It’s a shame because we were just getting started. I would like to thank all the fans who watched the show and the amazing cast and staff who worked so hard to make this dream come true.”
Amazon did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.
“Kevin” follows a spoiled domestic cat who joins a family of feral cats at a New York City shelter after being separated from his owner. Plaza co-created the series with Joe Wengert and co-starred with Jason Schwartzman, Amy Sedaris, Aparna Nancherla, Gil Ozeri, John Waters, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ben Rogers.
“I remember in the early days of ‘Parks & Rec’ we all thought it was going to be canceled because the ratings weren’t good, the numbers,” Plaza added. “But we have a special human being at NBC who believes in the show and makes us grow and makes the viewers fall in love with our characters. I expected that from ‘Kevin,’ but sadly we live in a different time in this industry. I hope the machine doesn’t ruin everything. Maybe Kevin will find a new owner one day. I love you all so much. Meow.”
Variety show critic Alison Herman wrote in her review that “Kevin” combines “cheerful vulgarity with sweet sincerity.” “But ‘Kevin’ is also a story of self-discovery and embracing independence. It would never be mistaken for a children’s weekend cartoon. With its surprisingly specific New York setting, the atmosphere is close to that of Cat’s ‘Broad City.’ But Kevin’s journey has a pleasing arc that permeates even the most absurd and over-the-top concepts, like Mame, staffed only by horses. ”
