A film adaptation of the mystery-adventure video game series “Broken Sword” is being developed by game maker Revolution Software, producer Story Kitchen, and Evan Spiliotopoulos, screenwriter of Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast.”

Created by Charles Cecil, the “Broken Sword” series debuted in 1996 with “Shadow of the Templars.” The series follows intrepid American George Stobart and fearless French journalist Nicole Collard as they navigate church intrigue in an iconic European setting.

Of the five titles released in the past 30 years, the Broken Sword game has been played by more than 10 million players and is credited with being the foundational title for modern story-driven gaming. Cecil’s Revolution Software recently concluded a successful Kickstarter campaign for its latest “Broken Sword” remake project, “Smoking Mirror Reforged,” raising nearly $1 million toward its $68,000 goal.

The screenplay for the movie “Broken Sword” was written by Spiliotopoulos, whose screenplays include “Unholy,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” the “G.I. Joe” movie, and “Snake Eyes.”

Story Kitchen, which has worked on several high-profile TV and film adaptations of video games, including the new “Sonic the Hedgehog” film series and Amazon’s upcoming “Life is Strange” series, will produce the film alongside Revolution’s Cecil and his partner Noirin Carmody.

“Few series in this day and age remain relevant, premium and true to the intellects of their viewers. ‘Broken Sword’ ticks all three boxes,” Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg said in a joint statement Tuesday. “Our job here is not to turn games into movies. It’s to take the world we’ve been building for 30 years and work with the people who built it to move it into the next medium it deserves.”

“Story Kitchen came to this project with a deep passion for IP,” added Charles Cecil, Founder and CEO of Revolution Software. “That’s unusual. The creative conversation was less about what Broken Sword could look like and more about translating what Broken Sword is. We’re very excited to be working with Story Kitchen and Evan.”
