You need to know
Robert Redford is remembered not only as a Hollywood legend, but also as a man of his family.
The Oscar-winning actor, director and founder of the Sundance Film Festival passed away on September 16th at the age of 89. Beyond his work, Redford and his first wife, Laura Van Weigenen, welcomed four children together: Scott, Shawna, James and Amy Redford.
Redford’s son Scott died of sudden infant death syndrome just two months later, while his younger son, James, died of cancer in October 2020. Meanwhile, his daughter (and grandchild) followed in his footsteps as a filmmaker and artist.

Rogers & Cowan’s chairman and CEO, Cindy Burger, said, “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025 at his home in Sundance in the mountains of Utah, surrounded by the people he loved.
Here’s everything you need to know about Robert Redford’s four children.
Scott Anthony Redford
Redford and Van Weigenen welcomed their first baby, son Scott Anthony Redford, on September 1, 1959. Scott unexpectedly passed away in Sid on November 19, 1959.
Actors rarely talk about Scott publicly. However, in November 2017, Redford looked back at his eldest son’s death.
“I was 21. My wife was 20. We were just starting our lives. We were just starting our careers in New York,” he told Esquire. “Of course, it’s trauma and I don’t know how it unfolds over time. We had to deal with it. You have to move on. And we have other kids here. But that kind of thing isn’t completely dismissed.
Scott is buried in Provo City Cemetery in Provo, Utah.
Shauna Redford, 64
Redford and Van Weigenen welcomed their daughter, Shauna Jean Redford, on November 15th, 1960.
Shauna attended the University of Colorado, Boulder and graduated in 1985 with a degree in arts. That October, The New York Times reported that Shauna had married her husband, Eric Schlosser, at her parents’ home in Provo Canyon, Utah. Their ceremony was held by a judge of the Utah Supreme Court and former mayor of Salt Lake City Ted Wilson. Schlosser went on to write fast food nationals for the book, and the pair eventually welcomed their two children, Maica and Conner Schlosser.
In 2018, Redford spoke to the Salt Lake Tribune about his retirement and what it means for Sundance Institute, an arts nonprofit organization founded in 1981. Sundance “is in the hands of my kids,” he said of the organization that runs the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
“I’ve spent a lot of time taking my kids (Shauna, Amy and Jamie) to the photos. “Basically, they’re inheriting what I started and I’m going to continue doing that with my grandchildren.”

David James “Jamie” Redford, the second son of Redford and Van Waygenen, was born on May 5, 1962. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, James grew up in New York and spent the summer at a family home in Utah.
As an adult, James was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis. This is a disease that affects the liver and bile ducts. James eventually received two liver transplants in 1993. He was inspired to start with James Redford’s transplant awareness following his surgery. The nonprofit’s purpose was to educate the public about organ and tissue donations. He continued his mission in 1999 with his documentary, “The Kindness of a Stranger.”
Like her sister, James studied at the University of Colorado Boulder University. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing and Film before completing his Masters in Literature from Northwestern University. These degrees were the foundation of James’ career, and he quickly combined environmental and social activities with filmmaking to direct and produce many documentaries.
He met his future wife, Kyle and CU Boulder, and was married in June 1988. They later welcomed two children, son Dylan and daughter Lena, and moved to Marine County, California.
In 2016, James told hollywoodchicago.com that he understands his father’s surname is carrying him far away in his career, but Redford also brought him a set-off.
“At least there’s no argument that I’m in a unique situation,” he told the outlet. “But I think the name proves to be a challenge whenever it proves useful. … At the end of the day, the tasks I have are the same as others to prove myself through my products and work.
James and his father opened the Redford Centre in 2005. The nonprofit combines the interests of the many Redford family’s interests: filmmaking and environmental activities. “After years of working to advocate for sustainability and protect wild places, my son James and I have recognized the power of storytelling to bring these issues and move them forward,” Redford said. “We started the Redford Centre to combine storytelling and action.”
On October 16, 2020, James’ wife, Kyle Redford, announced on Twitter that James had died of bile duct cancer in his Marin County home from his liver. “Jamie passed away today. We are heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, shocking life and loved by many,” she writes. “He’s deeply overlooked. As his 32-year-old wife, I am most grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together. I don’t know what we’ve done in the last two years.”
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that the filmmaker’s cancer was discovered in 2019 while awaiting another liver transplant.

Redford and Van Weigenen welcomed their youngest child, Amy Redford, on October 22, 1970. Like her brother, Amy grew up between New York and Utah. She studied at Dalton School and eventually moved to San Francisco, where she studied theater at San Francisco State University.
Like her brother James, Amy is proof that acting and filmmaking runs deep into the Redford family. In 2008, she spoke to Indiewire about her experiences with both, citing her father as one of her earliest influences.
“As a child, I witnessed the process of making a film and the extraordinary cast of characters that came together to make it happen,” she said. “I found myself drawn to the nomadic, creative life I had suggested. …It was a combination of luck, timing and stubbornness that led me to actually have the opportunity to do it.”
Amy has built a career in filmmaking, directing feature films, television episodes and music videos, including Guitar in 2008 and Jeff Buckley’s “Daily People” in 2016.
“I think it’s easier for women to sink their voices. I think women can say as great things as they are, but it’s easier to put their voices aside to accommodate others,” she said. “Even the loudest women are loud for reasons because they can’t hear. I had a daughter two months ago. I hope anything I’m doing has a positive effect on the chances that you don’t have to fight that hard.”
According to the New York Times, Amy married Scottish photographer Mark Mann from 2000 to 2004. In 2008, she married theater director Matt August six weeks before the birth of her first baby.
“In fact, it was easier to figure out when they would direct the film and have a baby. The two welcomed the twin set before they got divorced, a topic she touched on in a conversation with Ageist in 2022.
When asked what it was like to be a single mother, Amy explained: “I say there are costs and benefits in many ways. It’s very easy to refer to someone else staring at the kitchen table from you when you’re raising your child in the same house.
After spending time in New York and Los Angeles, Amy moved to Salt Lake City, where she works as a filmmaker and hosts a podcast called Scrappy Broads.
