Smash Hit “The Hunting Wives” was licensed by Lionsgate after the show was originally designed to air on Starz, and Netflix has been renewed with an eight-episode second season, the streamer announced. The show was a quick success on Netflix after its release on July 21, but the update took some time, sources say. This is because international sales had to be solved in order to become an original to global streamer Netflix. According to the announcement, the second season from Lionsgate and 3 Arts Entertainment will be released “only as a Netflix branded series in almost every country on Netflix.
According to data provided by Streamer, the Soapy drama “we spent five weeks on the Global English Top 10 TV List,” which earned over 20 million views in the meantime, even if it was only available in the US.
“The Hunting Wife” revolves around the Queen of Texas Bee Margo (Marine Åkerman), town rookie Sophie (Brittany Snow), and the crimes they have been involved in. Season 1 ended with a giant cliffhanger (literally!). Sophie pushes Margo’s brother Kyle’s body down the cliff into the river, but accidentally answers Margo’s call. Lots to solve! Logline from the new season 2 teases the reunion. “At the start of Season 2, Sophie and Margo are out. But soon, old secrets and new enemies return together.
“The Hunting Wives” was adapted by Rebecca Cutter, creator of May Cobb’s 2021 novel “Hightown,” and the second season continues the story. In a review of the show’s variety, Allison Herman praised elements of the satirical culture war, writing, “The Hunting Wife is a story of a culture conflict in the Red Nation, and remains its most interesting element even after the corpses disrupt the proceedings.”
In an interview with Variety in July, Okerman speculated about what the second season would entail as Margo was kicked out of her home by her super-rich husband Jed (Dermot Mulroney), who is running for governor. “I think Margo and Sophie have to unite together to hide the murder. Margo will reconcile with Jed. He wants to get the image right, especially if he is on this political path,” Åkerman said. “So she went back to him there and said, “Listen, I’ll stand by you, I’ll do everything you ask me, because she doesn’t want to lose that lifestyle or position of power.”
Several main characters lost iconic deaths in season 1, but returning for the second season is Yuki, Okerman, Mulroney, Jaime Ray Newman, Evan Jonigkate and George Ferrier.
In a statement, Cutter said, “I’m very excited to write these amazing characters again. I can’t wait to bring the audience to another sexy, twisted, crazy ride of stans through Maple Brook.” Cutter is currently developing another Netflix project with Jerry Bruckheimer Teleavsion, represented by CAA, Artists Collective, Artists Ousten Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner Auerbach Hynick Jaime Levine Sample & Klein.
