The so-called rapid effect is once again perfectly effective.
After Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement broke the internet, experts say her unique engagement ring is driving what could become a big trend in jewelry biz.
“We’re already looking at the ‘Taylor effect’ with all our might,” Laurel Diamond’s Laura Taylor told Page 6 of Swift’s “Old Mine Cut” Diamond, designed by Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry.
A jewelry expert said Wednesday after Swift’s engagement announcement went viral: “Searching for reductions in old mines has increased by almost 10,000% overnight. It is the most searched diamond cut this month, with over 170% interest over the second most popular cut (Cususion), and 427% increase over 427% (emerald).”
Characterized by hand cut in its shape, including rounded corners and thick facets, the old mine-cut diamonds are particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, and do not resemble either.
“From a trending perspective, I think we’ve actually seen this vintage style grow in popularity for a while,” says Taylor. “For example, Jessica McCormack’s antique-inspired designs are worn by Zendaya and Zoë Kravitz, so I think Taylor’s rings just take that a step further.”
And before Swift’s Sparks made headlines, cutting the old mine wasn’t the most popular choice to become a bride, Taylor says.
“The cutting of the old mine is definitely not for everyone,” says Laurel Diamond Pro.
Taylor adds a vintage cut lock. “They may look dark or a bit dark to people who are used to today’s style, but that’s part of the appeal and I wonder why it feels like the perfect choice for Taylor!”
A jewelry expert said: “The ring at hand feels very much like a handwritten letter, as she leaned into a more romantic and vintage way.
When you see the gem, which is reportedly estimated to be up to 10 carats, “Based on the photos she shared, I think it’s something known as a modern old mine cut, so it’s a diamond that was recently cut in an older style, but uses more modern techniques.”
“The facets, especially in their elongated shape, look sharper and more symmetrical than commonly found in true antique “OMC.” If that is the case, it features a pinhole curette that can be found to be correct, especially since you need a really skilled cutter to work with diamonds of that size.
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are married,” Swift and Kelse captioned their posts.
Swift and Kelce began dating in the summer of 2023, when soccer pros tried (and failed) to pass (and failed) a pop icon on one of their ERAS tours in Kansas City.
They have since supported Kelse in many of his games (and two Super Bowls!) and have been making cameos that have been on stage in London, with Kelse taking ERAS tours in multiple countries and making cameos that took place in London.
