“The Challenge” is aiming for a new home, but familiar themes return. The upcoming season 42, “The Challenge: Cutthroat” will be released on Paramount+ on August 5th. The show will continue to air weekly, with new episodes arriving at 12am PT/3am ET.
The series, currently touted as a Paramount+ original, has aired on MTV since it first aired in 1998. The “All Stars” spinoff was a streaming show, but this is the first time the flagship will be streamed exclusively.
“Cutthroat” is a returning theme for “The Challenge,” as it was the title of season 20, which aired in 2010. It’s also the birthplace of “Johnny Bananas’ Backpack,” so it feels only natural that both CT Tamburello and Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio would return.
Filmed in Thailand, the season will feature 24 contestants, including both newcomers and veterans, battling it out for a share of the $500,000 prize. The group will be divided into three teams. “The only way to take home a share of the prize money is to cross the finish line together as a team,” the press release says, but of course there are some twists and turns. Ultimately, the team captain has the power to decide how the prize money will be distributed or if it will all be kept for themselves. And that’s likely to be the case with this group.
Julie Pizzi, Justin Booth and Jacob Lane will serve as executive producers for Bunim/Murray. Diego Amson, Brad Thieman, and Joe Augle serve as co-executive producers, with Margaret Morales serving as supervising producer. Benjamin Hurwitz and Melissa Tallerin will serve as executive producers, and Angela Rio will serve as executive producer for MTV.
