Indian filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane have teamed up once again to spotlight writer-director Ravi Muppa’s short film ‘Incognito’. The film will be the debut release on a YouTube channel dedicated to shorts titled Oh Flip Shorts, which will be released on July 15th.
The channel comes courtesy of producer Ranjan Singh and is curated by Kashyap. The plan calls for new shorts to premiere on the platform every month, with the aim of building an audience and community around independent shorts.
‘Incognito’ stars Vikram Singh, Ayushi Nema and Dev Chauhan. The story is about a cash-strapped motel receptionist who earns extra income by selling hidden camera footage of guests, but is torn between self-preservation and intervention after filming a woman she believes to be a victim of human trafficking.
The short film has already been touring film festivals and screening at more than 20 international events, including the Oscar-nominated Palm Springs International Shortfest.
“I have always loved short films because they are a director’s first stepping stone to test their storytelling style and get real practice shooting a story,” Kashyap said. “Continuing the same, this is an initiative that I have curated to showcase some great short films presented by filmmakers that I respect. I am happy to start with Ravi Muppa’s ‘Incognito’ and I hope the audience will like it.”
“‘Incognito’ is a truly blue genre short story with a charming, beautiful atmosphere and an unconventional ending. Congratulations to Ravi and his team. We are very happy to be able to bring this to the audience,” added Motwane.
Variety has learned that plans for a feature-length version of Incognito are already in the works, with Invention Studios joining Flip Films and Campfire Studios as co-producers. Kashyap, Nicholas Weinstock, Divya Souza and Singh will be producing.
Previous development credits include “Stree” (2018), “Bala” (2019), “The Family” “This film has been an incredibly special journey, and I am deeply grateful to the producers, collaborators, and champions who believed in it and pushed it forward,” said Muppa, whose credits include “Man” (2019). “I’m especially excited that this is just the beginning, as we now look to expand Incognito into a feature film.” Mupa said.
Singh, who produced the short through his Flip Films banner, added, “I’m grateful to Anurag for curating it and to Vikram and other directors for collaborating on this. We plan to release one new short on this channel every month and hope to build a community soon.”
