“Super Mario Galaxy Movie” will complete its final orbit in space and arrive at Peacock on July 30th.
The film, directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic and Pierre LeDuc, has become the highest-grossing film of the year so far, surpassing $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts earlier this month. The trio also directed the first film in the series, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which became the second-highest-grossing film in 2023, behind Warner Bros. “Barbie”
The returning cast includes Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Jack Black (Bowser), and Keegan-Michael Key (Toad). There were also several new additions, including Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Rosalina, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
In an interview with Forbes, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri spoke at length about their companies’ collaboration and how that synergy has led to continued success. Regarding the reason why Super Mario Galaxy was ultimately made into a movie as the basis for the Mario series, director Miyamoto says, “It was the key to making the next movie.” This allowed the team to show “different sides” and “types” of Mario, while also presenting an opportunity to create a new galaxy with both “potential” and “appeal”. Meledandri said one of his goals was to bring audiences to theaters, saying, “Nintendo’s promise to create a cosmic world felt like an irresistible invitation for audiences to say, ‘Oh, I want to see how Nintendo fills that giant screen with its cosmic vision.'”
A third film has yet to be confirmed, but the sequel’s end credits scene featuring fan-favorite character Daisy certainly leaves the door open.
