Elon Musk posted Armie Hammer’s “Citizen Vigilante” on his X account on Friday, sharing the controversial indie action actor with his 240 million followers. The rink was active for about 48 hours but went dark on Saturday.
According to the Telegraph, “Citizen Vigilante,” written and directed by 60-year-old German filmmaker Uwe Boll, has been banned in his home country due to its disturbing depictions of violence and anti-immigrant sentiment. The film was released in the United States on June 19th.
“Citizen Vigilante” follows Hammer as an American in Europe on a bloody mission to eliminate all criminal immigrants. Other cast members include Kostas Mandylor, Desiree Giorgetti, Steffen Menekes, Nev Tupin, and Mukit Abdul Hamid.
In his review of the film for Variety, critic Todd Gilchrist was at a loss for words, writing, “Boll, which has been an embarrassment to the film industry since the early 2000s, is here a violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt exploitation on the same qualitative level as House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, and BloodRayne.” In fact, the film is so shockingly bad that it seems like the writer, director, and producers were intentionally sabotaging star Armie Hammer, whose supposed comeback could only be undermined by this project. ”
Hammer, who has appeared in films such as “The Social Network,” “Call Me by Your Name,” and “Sorry,” faced sexual assault allegations in 2021 that saw his career collapse. Mr. Hammer denied the charges, and prosecutors declined to file charges against him in 2023.
Boll revealed to X Corporation on Saturday that “Citizen Vigilante 2” will be released in 2027. The day before, Musk responded to a post from Company X indicating that “Citizen Vigilante” was the No. 2 movie on the Apple TV charts. He wrote, “Citizen Vigilante 2 will be even better.”
