Jake Reiner has made his first public appearance since the gruesome murders of his parents, Rob and Michelle Reiner.
“This week, I attended the premiere of ‘Life, Rally and Misadventures’ premiering Friday on @hbo @hbomax. Watch me in the first episode 🫡🇺🇸,” he captioned a snap of himself on Thursday’s red carpet.
At the premiere, Jake wore a black blazer, black pants, and a gray T-shirt.
Jake, 35, and his 28-year-old sister Romy have remained largely unknown since the tragedy.
The longtime couple was murdered on December 14th at their Los Angeles home in the Brentwood neighborhood. Rob and Michelle were 78 and 70 years old, respectively.
Their second son Nick (32) was arrested as the main suspect in the murder. He was charged with two separate counts of first-degree murder and is currently being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
He pleaded not guilty at a court hearing in February.
Jake broke his silence about his parents’ deaths in a heartbreaking essay for Substack in April, in which he detailed the exact moment he learned of their murders.
“I was at Union Station to celebrate the life of one of my best friends, Christian Anderson, who passed away in October,” Jake wrote. “Just then, my sister Romy called me to tell me that my father had passed away. A few minutes later, she called me back and told me that my mother had also passed away.”
Jake said he felt “so much was taken away” by losing his parents, adding that the tragedy “shattered and enraged me at the same time.”
“Nothing can prepare you for the feeling of losing both of your parents at the same time, in an instant,” Jake continued. “It’s too shocking to understand. I still have to wake up every morning and tell myself, no, this is not a dream. This is truly a living nightmare for me.”
Later in the essay, Jake called his parents’ murders “horrible” and said that every day since has been “horrifying.”
He eventually mentioned Nick, saying his brother was “at the center” of the tragedy.
“We lost over half our family that night in the most violent way imaginable,” Jake wrote. “It’s almost impossible to process.”
Romy has not yet broken his silence about the tragedy, but Jake said in his essay: “I plan to tell[my story]in my own way and in my own time.”
Jake and Romy first addressed Rob and Michelle’s horrific deaths in a heartbreaking statement to Page Six on December 17th, but they made no mention of Nick.
“Words cannot even describe the unimaginable pain that we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the brother and sister said. “The horrifying and devastating loss of our parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner, is something no one should ever have to experience.”
They also asked for “respect and privacy” as they privately grieve the death of their parents.
They did not attend Nick’s Feb. 23 court hearing.
Nick struggled with drug addiction for years and was in and out of rehab facilities. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia before his parents died.
If convicted, Nick faces the possibility of the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
