Neon’s Palme d’Or winning film ‘Fjord’ has a release date set for October

The passionate family drama “Fjord”, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, will be released in theaters this fall.

Neon, which acquired the film a year ago, has scheduled “Fjord” for Oct. 9, the same release date as the studio’s previous Palme Award-winning films “Parasite,” “Anora” and “Anatomy of Fall.” All of these films were nominated for Oscars, with “Parasite” and “Anora” winning Best Picture.

Fjord, directed by Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Rijnsve as the parents of a Romanian family with strict religious beliefs who move to a small village in Norway. When a daughter is found with bruises at school, five children are taken away and a legal saga begins. Guy Lodge of Variety described the film as a “brilliantly intertwined social drama” and wrote, “Everything is always going on in Fjord, fitting for a film so keenly attuned to the ever-expanding potential for global movement, misunderstanding, and conflict.”

Director Mungiu won Cannes’ highest honor, the Palme d’Or, for “4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days” in 2007, followed by the film festival’s Best Screenplay Award for “Beyond the Hills” in 2012, and the Best Director Award for “The Graduate” in 2016.

‘Fjord’ extends Neon’s incredible winning streak, starting with Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Parasite’ and continuing with Julia Ducournau’s ‘Titan’, Ruben Østlund’s ‘Triangle of Sorrow’, Justine Trier’s ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, Sean Baker’s ‘Anora’ and Jafar Panahi’s ‘It Was Just’ to win a record seven consecutive Palme d’Ors. It was an accident. ”
