A second memo sent to media outlets in connection with Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance said the mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, 84, had died, NBC News recently reported.
Shortly after Nancy’s disappearance, the Guthrie family received two notes. The first demanded a ransom in cryptocurrency for Nancy’s safe return, but the details of the second were not disclosed until now. According to ABC News, the second message said Nancy died shortly after being abducted and was buried somewhere in the wild.
Nancy was last seen at her home in Tucson, Arizona, on January 31st. Two days later, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told reporters he believed Nancy had been kidnapped and that he had found “very disturbing” scenes at her home, but he did not provide enough details.
The first major development in the investigation occurred on February 10, when the FBI discovered doorbell footage of a possible intruder at Nancy’s home. Those involved were arrested a few days later, but quickly released. Since then, Nancy has made little progress in her recovery.
Savannah Guthrie recently filled in for Sheinelle Jones on the fourth hour of “Today” and spoke with host Jenna Bush Hager about what it was like to go back to work while her mother was still missing.
“When I see you in the morning, I know that no matter what’s going on, you’re watching me,” she said. “Sometimes you feel like you want to get the work done, you feel like you have to get it together, and it feels like it’s too much. But I’m glad to be back. It’s like two hours of the day. It’s not that I don’t think about it, because I do. But it’s about doing something. Being with the guys brings me a lot of joy. It’s not easy.”
