Multiple sources tell Page Six that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding at Madison Square Garden will be a production on the scale of her massive “Ellas Tour.”
Sources say the event has been in the works for “months” ahead of the big day on July 3, under the direction of Los Angeles-based celebrity wedding planner Mark Seed.
“He can create something amazing out of nothing,” a source told Page Six.
And with the entire 20,000-seat arena likely to be filled, he’s definitely the man for the job. Officials say it will likely take several days to build a full-fledged wedding venue and then several days to tear it down again. Apparently, MSG has no events on its calendar from June 29th to July 6th.
If Swift and Kelsea go all out, the venue will likely need a major makeover.
“It’s going to be an Elas Tour level production,” Darren Orash, founder of Nomad-based production company On the Move Entertainment, told Page Six.
“It’s doable, but it’s like planning a concert. A wedding that would cost $300,000 elsewhere would cost $3 million in the garden,” he added.
Explaining what it will look like, Orash added that the production team will have to build an overhead structure using decorative elements such as drapes “to bring down the scale” from the 150-foot-high ceilings, so it will feel more “romantic, up close, and intimate.”
“They literally build a wedding venue on the floor. You have your own mini stage, dance floor, surrounding tables all in there, and you have a venue within a venue.”
And Orasz said the windowless arena means Swift and Kelce can use the lighting to their advantage, as they have full control over it to hide the huge four-tier seats.
“If you make the seats pitch black, no one can see. You light up where you want people to see,” he said.
As for the actual look and decor of the wedding, planners believe Swift will want to lean into her trademark style, noting that it will likely feature a lot of floral elements, just like the couple’s engagement.
“If you think about Taylor’s style, she leans heavily into the romantic, fairytale aesthetic that appeared throughout her era, including ‘Love Story,’ ‘Folklore,’ and ‘Evermore.’
“Design elements are likely to include enchanting gardens, soft candlelight, draped ceilings, and fabrics with vintage touches,” says New York-based celebrity wedding planner Lauren Ziza.
A second wedding planner also feels that multiple spaces will likely be created within the arena for different parts of the wedding.
“People forget that you have a ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner dance, and afterparty, and that requires four different spaces.
“I imagine the main floor of the arena will be the place for dinner and dancing, similar to a fashion show or the Met Gala where you take over the venue. Instead of being dictated by the space, you look at the space and decide what to put in it,” the source said.
The venue itself has several options available to the “Karma” singer and her Kansas City Chiefs fiancée, potentially allowing them to host a more intimate ceremony followed by a larger celebration in the main arena.
“We believe the (Infosys) Theater is where the ceremony will take place,” a wedding industry insider explained, referring to the venue’s 5,000-person Roman theater-style sit-down underground venue.
“The ceremony is the most important. It can also be held by closing and reconfiguring lounge and restaurant spaces for a more intimate ceremony,” the source added.
Whichever part of the venue is used, Seed and its planning assistants must ensure that all aspects are approved by the union in accordance with MSG policy.
“Anyone who works there has to complain to the union. The union electricians, the union match-fixers, the people who load the equipment, the people who set up the stage, all the support is from the union,” a music industry source told Page Six, also noting that the cost of insuring the event venue and workers would be astronomical.
When it comes to arrivals, big stars like Swift and Kelsea, and guests at what is sure to be a star-studded wedding, won’t be able to arrive by subway or park in front of the venue amidst the hawkers, halal carts and weirdos that hang out around Penn Station.
Swift and Kelce will likely arrive in a black SUV at an unmarked entrance off 7th Avenue and 33rd Street. There, a secure garage door at street level leads to the basement through a special passageway, five stories below, and direct entry into the building.
When it comes to catering, sources predict that Swift, who is often a champion of small businesses and has fierce loyalty to her adopted hometown of Nashville, will most likely bring in caterers from that city.
“She’s very generous about enriching people’s lives[by booking]rather than taking advantage of the usual suspects,” a wedding planner source said.
If the unassuming Seed, who is “famous for never talking about his clients,” is indeed transforming MSG for Swift and Kelsey’s big wedding, it’s certainly not his first rodeo.
He previously planned the wedding of Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney in 2019, holding the reception at Newport’s historic Belcourt, a luxurious 1894 mansion inspired by Versailles, France.
He also built a greenhouse on the lawn of actress and producer Sam Ressler’s parents’ Los Angeles home for her April 2022 wedding to Jason Borg.
If Swift and Kelce marry at MSG, it won’t be their first marriage.
According to Rolling Stone, funk legend Sly Stone famously hosted model Cathy Silva in a theatrical wedding in 1974 that required guests to wear gold.
The over-the-top incident became a publicity stunt for the singer’s backing band, the Family Stone, who performed a sold-out concert in front of 21,000 fans.
Among the Seoul superstar’s outlandish demands for the ceremony was that 100 white doves be released into the arena once the couple says “I do.” However, this idea did not sit well with MSG, who flatly rejected the request.
Then, in 1982, 2,075 couples tied the knot in a mass wedding ceremony sponsored by the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, a religious sect founded in South Korea by Reverend Sun Myung Moon.
MSG also feels very nostalgic about Swift. She has performed there eight times throughout her career, starting with her 2009 “Fearless” tour.
As well as their families, the guest list is strongly rumored to include some of Swift’s closest friends, including Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, the Haim sisters, Ed Sheeran, and even Zoë Kravitz, although it’s unclear whether her fiancé Harry Styles, one of Swift’s ex-boyfriends, will be in the building.
Meanwhile, Page Six recently confirmed that Miles Teller and his wife Kelly Sperry were removed from the list after a falling out, and as previously reported, Swift’s former best friend Blake Lively also admitted to being persona non grata.
