Proximity Media, the media company founded by Sinners director Ryan Coogler, Gingy Coogler and Seb Ohanian, has signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to exclusively develop television series for the streamer.
The company previously had a general television deal with Disney, which expired earlier this year.
Proximity Media’s television division is behind series such as the Marvel movie “Ironheart,” the National Geographic documentary series “Hurricane Katrina: A Race Against Time,” and the animated “Black Panther” spinoff “Eyes of Wakanda.”
“We founded Proximity Media with a simple goal: to tell event-driven stories that bring people closer to often overlooked subjects. As we continue to expand Proximity’s television business, we are excited to partner with Netflix, which has consistently demonstrated a commitment to unique creators and original storytelling,” Ryan Coogler, Ginsy Coogler and Ohanian said in a joint statement. “We look forward to working with Bella, Ginny, Nne, and the entire Netflix team to bring the story to television audiences around the world.”
“Proximity Media has built an incredible reputation for championing visionary creators and creating stories that deeply resonate with audiences around the world,” added Ginny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada. “The company’s founders Ryan Coogler, Zinji Coogler and Seb Ohanian have cultivated an award-winning television division that continues to push the boundaries of storytelling. We are excited to welcome the entire Proximity team to Netflix and look forward to working with Ni Ebon and the studio team to bring the next innovative series to life.”
Director Ryan Coogler is riding high on the success of “Sinners,” which grossed $365 million worldwide and won his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The vampire fantasy also won four statuettes, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, who played the twins. Coogler also wrote and directed the film “Black Panther” and directed “Creed” and his debut film “Fruitvale Station.”
Ginsey Coogler, who has been married to Ryan for 10 years, is a Golden Globe-winning producer for “Sinners.” She also appeared on the “Ironheart,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Space Jam a New Legacy,” and “Creed III” EPs.
Ohanian is a Golden Globe-winning screenwriter and producer whose credits include The Search, Run, and Missing. He also produced “Sinners” with Proximity partners.
