Pixar released Toy Story 5 this month, and the legendary animation studio is already developing further sequels, including Incredibles 3, Monsters, Inc. 3, and Coco 2. But one Pixar hit that hasn’t yet been turned into a franchise is Brad Bird’s 2007 Oscar-winning film, Ratatouille, about a rat named Remy and his dream of becoming a chef in Paris. The film is a bona fide classic and a box office success ($623 million worldwide, $1 billion adjusted for inflation). It’s probably only a matter of time before “Remy’s Delicious Restaurant 2” is released. Lemmy’s voice actor, Patton Oswalt, is waiting to hear from him.
“Obviously, I’d love to see a sequel to Ratatouille,” Oswalt told The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast, but stressed that any sequel would depend entirely on original director Brad Bird coming back with a great idea.
“There was never going to be a sequel to The Incredibles until he thought, ‘Wait a minute. There’s a story to tell,'” Oswalt said of the filmmaker. “So if he comes up with an idea, that’s what I want to do. I don’t want to be that guy who says, ‘Hey, what if Lemmy did this?'” I want that to be one of those things that you can’t escape. I don’t want us to be like, “Okay, let’s pull out the legal pad and dismantle the sequel.” There are a lot of movies that are made that way, but they always feel inorganic. ”
Oswalt continued, “I want the sequel to not be the same type of movie, but the same energy that Terminator 2 and Alien had. So there’s an expansion of the story that we actually have to tell…This isn’t just about making money. And yes, by the way, we love money and we’re going to have it, but we’re also going to get paid by telling a whole new dimension of great stories that we didn’t even know existed.” ”
Ratatouille is a sequel to Bird’s The Incredibles, both of which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. “Remy’s Ratatouille” also received Oscar nominations for original score, sound editing, sound mixing, and original screenplay. The film grossed $623 million, making it the sixth-highest grossing film of 2007.
