Oliver Tree’s ex-girlfriend has revealed that she was a “total wreck” after it was confirmed he was one of six people killed in a fiery helicopter crash in Brazil.
Melanie Martinez, who dated Oliver Tree for less than two years, paid tribute to the singer on Sunday after he passed away at the age of 32 in Rio de Janeiro.
“Today really sucked,” Martinez, 31, wrote on his Instagram Story.
“It’s really hard to understand how someone with whom I shared such a tangible and formative time in my life could suddenly be gone. He was so dedicated to his art, and I admired and admired that so much.”
New York-based singer Martinez paid tribute to Tree’s creativity and joked about the stunts he would perform in heaven.
“I think everyone who knew him will look back on the moments of laughter and joy he so easily sparked,” she wrote.
“His laugh was so contagious and warm.
“His ability to creatively lead and take action, with a childlike sense of wonder and awe, was so inspiring. He had such a kind heart and was a true artist in every way.
“Rest in Peace Oliver. I know you are making the angels laugh. I will be here to see what tricks and creative projects you have planned in heaven. With love.”
The “Life Goes On” singer and Martinez admitted to dating in September 2019 after chatting as friends, but had deleted photos of each other by July 2020, Parade reported.
This fueled rumors of a breakup, and in May 2021, she confirmed their breakup, but said they were still on good terms.
But in August 2023, Martinez appealed to many of her fans to stop abusing Tree, who was born in Santa Cruz, Calif., amid reports that she had harassed him.
“Please can you please leave @olivertree alone… We ended our relationship years ago and remained on good terms,” she wrote on her Instagram Story at the time.
“Please be kind and stop spreading false information. We already ended our relationship many years ago and have already said that we are on good terms.
“I’ve said before how annoying it is when you bully people on the internet. Stay positive and be kind to each other.”
In a sit-down with YouTuber and comedian Anthony Padilla, Tree talked about how online hate has affected him.
He told Padilla that Martinez was showered with more hate after he told fans to leave him alone.
Martinez released the song “Moon Cycle” in 2023, and fans speculated that it was about her relationship with Tree, which she flatly denied.
“The lunar cycle is not about Oliver,” she said. “This isn’t about anyone. This doesn’t make any sense. Stop making this stuff up and leave him alone.”
“That’s when I fell into a pretty serious depression,” Tree said.
“People don’t realize that what they say and do has an impact on people, and they think it’s not being heard or noticed, and it certainly confuses people.”
Tree, known for her unique bowl-cut mullet hybrid hairstyle, was on board one of the helicopters carrying five people. Only the pilot was on board the second aircraft.
Gaspi, an Argentine influencer with 7.5 million social media followers, was also in the same helicopter as Oliver Tree, who also died.
Lucas Vignale, Lucas Brito Chavez and pilot Alexandre Sousa were killed.
Charles Marsillac, the sole pilot of the other helicopter, was described by friends as a “loving family man,” CNN reported.
“Those who flew with him admired his seriousness and dedication,” said the friend, a father of three.
Two helicopters collided over an electric car parking lot, causing 20 vehicles to burst into flames.
One of the helicopters burst into flames, and the occupants of the other jumped out before it hit the ground.
“It was scary, absolutely scary,” said Fernandez de Freitas, a tire repair worker.
Officials said the cause of the collision was still under investigation.
Singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha, Washington, D.C.-born comedian Whitney Cummings and internet star Andy Milonakis also paid tribute to Tree.
“Rest in peace Oliver Tree. I don’t know how to handle this situation. I’m glad I got to spend a lot of time with him last month, but this is the worst,” Milonakis said.
“Life is fragile and unfair.”
“Oliver Tree is one of the most talented people on the planet, usually accompanied by egos and all kinds of mindless nonsense, but Oliver is pure love and the best version of what an artist and a human being can and should be,” Cummings wrote in X.
Meanwhile, Bebe Rexha described the singer as “passionate, talented and kind.”
Tree was in South America as part of his “first world tour,” which was scheduled to visit more than 30 countries and visit all seven continents.
He performed in São Paulo on June 6th and was scheduled to perform in Lisbon, Portugal, on July 1st.
Tree was scheduled to perform in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and China by the end of the year.
The singer, who has over 11 million monthly listeners on Spotify, burst onto the music scene when he worked with Skrillex at the age of 17.
Tree took a break from the scene to study music technology and released an independent album, Splitting Branches, in 2013.
He returned to the scene in 2020 with his first studio album, Ugly is Beautiful, which included the platinum hit “Life Goes On.”
By 2024, he was nominated for an International Song Brit Award with Robin Schulz for his hit song “Miss You.”
He went on to release “Cowboy Tears,” “Alone in a Crowd,” and the album “Love You Madly Hate You Badly” in April 2026.
Alongside his music career, Tree broke the Guinness World Record for the largest kick scooter on the planet in 2020, measuring over 13 feet tall and 10 feet long.
