“24 Jump Street” is currently in production, with stars Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube in talks to star in the third installment of the R-rated crime comedy series.
Rodney Rothman (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) will direct and co-write the screenplay with Hill and Meghan Malloy. Also returning are producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the first two films, 2012’s 21 Jump Street and 2014’s 22 Jump Street, as well as Neal H. Moritz. Tatum and Reed Carolyn are producing for Free Association, with Hill and Matt Daines also producing under the Strong Baby banner.
In “21 Jump Street,” Hill and Tatum played Schmidt and Jenko, a couple of underachieving cops who infiltrate a local high school to take down a drug gang. The film, which marked Lord and Miller’s live-action directorial debut, grossed more than $200 million worldwide. Ice Cube plays their superior, Captain Dixon. The sequel, in which Hill and Tatum go back and forth undercover during their college years, surpassed that total with $331 million at the box office.
The third installment in the successful Jump Street film series has been in development at Sony for more than a decade. Tatum once described the script for 23 Jump Street, which was later rejected, as “the best script I’ve ever read for a third movie.” (The film was designed as a crossover with Sony’s blockbuster “Men in Black” series.)
No need to skip ahead to 24 Jump Street.
First, we already know that Sony’s movie Jump Street is a reboot of the 1980s TV series starring Johnny Depp. Additionally, the “22 Jump Street” coda sees Schmidt and Jenko take on a series of other undercover missions that could be “23 Jump Street.” The two went undercover at medical school, culinary school, firefighter school, dance school, and seminary, then went to space, and eventually became a video game and an animated series. As such, Sony continues the gag by naming its next film “24 Jump Street.”
As of now, Tatum has only been offered a return to 24 Jump Street. Negotiations are expected to take place soon.
