Jennifer Lopez missed Britney Spears and Madonna’s iconic 2003 VMA kiss because she was filming a movie.
“I was working on a movie at the same time called ‘Shall We Dance,’ and they wouldn’t let me leave the movie,” Lopez told Andy Cohen on Monday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live.
The 56-year-old “Office Romance” star revealed that she was scheduled to join the iconic singers for a sultry medley performance of “Like a Virgin.” The role ultimately went to Christina Aguilera.
“We rehearsed and everything,” Lopez told Cohen, noting that “we went to Madonna’s house” to prepare for the performance.
“It was me, my girlfriend and Britney,” Lopez recalls. “She was playing guitar and we were singing.”
It was the kiss between Madonna, now 67, Spears, now 44, and Aguilera, now 45, that made the performance unforgettable, but Lopez said she didn’t rehearse the smooch on stage.
“But[Madonna]said that’s what she wanted to do,” Lopez revealed. “It was like, ‘We’re getting married, I’m going to be the groom, you guys are going to sing.'” I was the first one who was going to come out and sing ‘Like a Virgin.’ ”
The “Jenny from the Block” hitmaker confessed, “I can’t really remember what it was, but it was something like that.”
Lopez said that the crew on the set of “Shall We Dance” allowed her to “go see Madonna on the weekends,” but ultimately did not allow her to “take off from the movie to do the actual show.”
Representatives for Madonna and Spears did not immediately respond to Page Six’s requests for comment on Tuesday.
The finished production saw Spears, Madonna and Aguilera take to the stage in wedding-themed outfits for performances of “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood,” culminating in a three-way kiss that took the audience’s breath away.
Finally, Missy Elliott joined the trio for the hit song “Work It.”
In January 2022, Madonna said on Instagram Live that she wanted to recreate her kiss with Spears while on tour, saying, “Yeah! Stadium, baby! Me and Britney, how about that?”
A few months later, in June 2022, Spears locked lips with Madonna while celebrating her marriage to Sam Asghari.
