It has been announced that Jason Momoa will be leaving PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures’ video game adaptation of “Helldivers,” directed by Justin Lin.
The reason for his departure from the project, which is based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ video game franchise, was not disclosed. Sony is in the process of finding new stars and other cast members.
This shooter-style game follows a squad of elite soldiers known as the Helldivers as they battle alien creatures attempting to destroy the fictional planet Super Earth. The sci-fi action film is currently scheduled for release on November 10, 2027, but further plot details are not yet known. Momoa’s casting was first announced in February.
Hutch Parker is producing with Asad Kizilbash and Lin of PlayStation Productions through Perfect Storm Entertainment.
Sony and PlayStation previously collaborated with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg on 2022’s Uncharted, which grossed $407 million worldwide. Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” series and HBO’s “The Last of Us” were also collaborations between Sony and PlayStation.
Helldivers was released by Arrowhead Game Studios in 2015, and its sequel, Helldivers 2, was released in 2024, so this property has plenty of sequel potential.
Momoa has several projects in the works, including “A Minecraft Movie: Squared,” a sequel to the hit “Minecraft.” “Animal Friends” is a hybrid of live-action and animation. “Fast Forever” and “Protect Jared.” This year, he will appear in Paramount and Legendary’s video game adaptation Street Fighter as the savage Blanka, in Dune: Part 3 as swordsman Duncan Idaho, and in Supergirl as intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo.
Deadline first reported the news.
