The Indonesian horror film “Korean Haunted Hospital” will have its world premiere at the 30th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan) and will be screened in the festival’s Signature section.
The film was produced by MD Pictures and Ambala Brothers Films, directed by Angi Ambala, and written by Lele Raila.
This photo is a remake of the found footage horror film “Gongjiam: Haunted Asylum,” which was released in South Korea in 2018. Following the BiFan world premiere on July 9, the film will also be released in Indonesia under the title “402: Rumahsakit Angker Korea.”
“I grew up surrounded by movies. Coming from a family of filmmakers and starting my career as a child actor, movies have always felt like a part of my identity,” Ambala said. “Of all the genres, I’ve always been deeply connected to found footage because it creates a raw, intimate experience that feels frighteningly real. I’ve worked with films like The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield, The Chronicles, and most importantly, I’ve always loved found footage. Movies like “Haunted Asylum” shaped my love for this storytelling style. When I learned that this remake was being developed, I immediately knew I had to get involved, pouring my fear and curiosity into every character and scene.”
“The original ‘Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum’ is one of my favorite horror movies ever made. When I heard that MD Pictures had acquired the remake rights, I immediately pitched the story. My goal was to create a localized version that respected the original while bringing something new, something distinct enough to justify its existence as a remake,” Laila added.
“While maintaining the core premise and tension of the original, the film thoughtfully reflects today’s streaming culture and content consumption environment, offering a uniquely modern experience. It provides vivid suspense and horror for audiences who are exposed to this story for the first time, while providing a refreshing treat for longtime fans,” said Martin Lee, BiFan Programmer for Asian Films.
The 30th BiFan will start on July 2nd.
MD Pictures, which is listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, will produce “KKN: The Curse of the Dancing Village” in 2022, which has exceeded 10 million viewers and recorded the highest box office revenue ever for an Indonesian horror film.
