Maya Hawke is shedding light on how she was raised by Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.
On NPR’s “Rachel Martin’s Wild Cards,” Maya becomes addicted to a therapy her mother instilled in her as a child called “Witch Next Door.”
“My mother really taught me to love and respect nature…like herbal remedies for things,” she began. “It’s kind of like ‘The Witch’s Next Door’. It’s not hard or difficult, but it’s adventurous.”
She went on to explain that one thing she still remembers from her childhood was the pineapple skin tea her mother made her drink when she had a cold.
“Because the enzymes in pineapple skin are good for curing colds,” she added.
Maya described her father as “a magical person in a different way.”
“He’s a magical thinker. I wouldn’t say he’s a witch, but he used to do things like treasure hunts for me when we were kids,” Maya added. “He is cunning and magical, but he is not a witch.”
The “Stranger Things” star said she grew up between Manhattan and upstate New York.
Maya explained that Uma loves nature and is a “great gardener”.
Maya explained that her mother didn’t know how “important” her parents were when she was young because she spent most of her time “kneeling” in the garden with her, looking for ingredients to make soup.
Maya comes from one of Hollywood’s most famous families. Of course, Ethan is best known for his roles in Dead Poets Society, Training Day, Boyhood, and the Before trilogy, while his mother Uma rose to fame for her iconic roles in Pulp Fiction and Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill films.
Ethan and Uma met on the set of Gattaca and married in 1998, but divorced in 2005.
Maya followed in her parents’ footsteps and went on to have a successful career as an actress and singer-songwriter, becoming widely known for her role as Robin Buckley on Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things.
Maya has four siblings in total. She has one full sibling, her younger brother Levon Lorne Thurman Hawk.
From her marriage to her father, Ryan Shawhughes, Maya has two half-sisters, Clementine Hawk and Indiana Hawk.
Due to her mother’s relationship with financier Arpad Busson, she has another half-sister, Luna Thurman Busson.
