‘Ever After’ star Patrick Godfrey dies at 93

Patrick Godfrey, who co-starred with Drew Barrymore in 1998’s Ever After, has died at the age of 93.

The actor died on Thursday, according to his talent agency Markham Froggatt & Irwin.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Mr. Patrick Godfrey passed away last night,” the statement began. “He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Paddy was an extraordinarily talented actor and a wonderful person. We will all miss him very much.”

The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

Godfrey was best known for his role as Leonardo da Vinci in the 1998 romantic comedy, alongside Barrymore and Dougray Scott, Anjelica Huston, Megan Dodds, Melanie Lynskey, Timothy West, and Judy Parfitt.

.The movie was a twist on the Cinderella story.

Godfrey first entered the entertainment business in 1956 after joining the BBC’s Radio Drama Company.

The late star then made her film debut in the 1972 television production Miss Julie, alongside Helen Mirren, Donal McCann and Heather Canning.

Godfrey’s career spanned several decades and also starred in 1986’s Clockwise, 1993’s The Remains of the Day, 2002’s The Count of Monte Cristo, and 2012’s Les Misérables.

He also appeared in several television series such as ‘Doctor Martin’, ‘Fallen Angels’, ‘Trial & Retribution’, ‘Shades’, ‘The Bill’ and ‘Screen Two’.

Godfrey last voiced Jim in the 2024 short film Rejoyce!

His last TV appearance was in the BBC medical drama Casualty in 2021.

In 2023, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Ever After, Barrymore reflected on how the project changed her outlook on life.

“I was in my early 20s, I was trying to start a company, I wanted to tell stories, I wanted to make movies, and that particular message of being able to save yourself and not having to wait to be rescued was definitely the most uplifting thing in my life,” she told Entertainment Tonight at the time about her lessons learned.

“Honestly, I don’t know who I would be without it. It changed the way I looked at the world,” Barrymore admitted.
