Independent Film Company and Shudder have acquired Alex Goyette’s debut feature, The Breeder.
The film tells the story of an eccentric poodle breeder who lures penniless college students to his secluded ranch with the promise of research funding. He soon realized there was a catch.
“Bleeder” stars Daniel Doheny, Dot Marie Jones, Maddie Phillips and Tanaya Beatty. In addition to directing the film, Goyette also wrote the screenplay. The agreement covers distribution rights in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The film will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 6th, and will be released in theaters this fall.
“Independent Film Company and Shudder have always been a dream home for us,” Goyette said. “Following its world premiere in Tribeca, we are thrilled to partner with them to bring The Breeder to audiences. As the debate around eugenics continues to resurface, our film confronts those ideas through the eyes of a deranged poodle breeder.”
“‘The Breeder’ is the kind of movie that makes you lean back and ask, ‘How did they get away with this?'” said Mark Ward of IFC Entertainment Group. “This production is provocative and never fails to surprise us just when we think we’ve figured it out. We knew the minute we saw it that audiences would be talking about it long after they left the theater. We can’t wait to shock audiences on the big screen later this year.”
Breeder is produced by Ian Sturt, Byron Ashley, Brian Mitchell, Chris Wilkinson and K. Asher Levin, and executive produced by Jeremy Ross, Ronnie Exley, Stephen Schneider, Ryan Merchant and Tyson Cole. The film was financed by Rabbit Black and For J Films. The deal was negotiated with UTA by Ward on behalf of Independent Film Company and Shudder on behalf of the filmmakers.
